Planning: Treatment

The treatment was written up by Titus Goremucheche as part of the disscusion by Team Black Hat.

This is the Treatment for “BlackHat Films” and here we are going to briefly explain what you will expect to see in our opening scene for our horror movie. This summaries the basics that are going to be there, as full treatment will be up shortly, when the production team finalizes everything that will be included in the opening.

The first that will appear to the audience is a non-diegetic sound of a mother’s cry, in a ghostly and sinister way; the cry is very distant and as the opening titles appears which include the production company name. The font type for the title will appear in white and change colour to red with blood for a split second, which will get the audience in the right frame of mind that they are watching a horror movie. As the opening titles are playing we hear a diegetic sound of rain banging against a window. Then we get our first code of a camera shot panning from the ground to a boy who is laying down on the bed, his on his phone when we first see him and his about to go to sleep, as that shot place through we get the titles of the people who are playing a major part in the movie for example, the directors, producers, music by and the actors. These titles will play for approximately 20 seconds of the opening. Then we cut to a point of view shot of him putting down the phone because it’s raining and there is no signal, when he puts his phone down he goes to sleep. As we get those first two shots we don’t hear and non-diegetic sound the only sound we hear is all diegetic, the rain on the window, the boy moving on the bed and him placing his phone on the table near his bed. We then cut to a close up of the boy closing his eyes as his sleeping, then the camera shot will zoom out to show the room in a bit more detail, his room is dark and gloomy and you can sense that his not the only person in that room because there’s a shadow that moves really quickly in front of the camera, the reason why there is a showdown that will move fast across the camera is so that we can get the audience to jump so in other words a false scare.

Then we start to hear non-diegetic which is quiet in the background and it sounds like a lullaby but we want to make it sound that it doesn’t sound exactly like a lullaby because we want to audience to remember that sound because it will appear a few times in the opening. As the non-diegetic sounds plays we cut into the boy’s dream, where we can see a woman hanging herself in his room. As this scene plays out the non-diegetic will be slow and very eerie. As the woman hangs herself, the boy having the dream tries to save her but he cannot move his stuck in his bed and when he tries to speak to the woman his voice doesn’t come out as she’s hanging herself she sings a lullaby, the effect on this is so that the audience can piece together the non-diegetic lullaby sounds they heard when they got that false scare.

He then tries tries had to get out of bed and falls down but as he falls down off his bed it cuts to a part where his fell off his bed in real life and he looks at his phone to see the time and its 02:15 in the morning. He then gets back into bed and he sleeps on his side face with an extreme close up of his eyes, he then hears someone singing a lullaby behind him and he slowly turns to see who it is and as he turns the camera zooms out slowly as is zooms out it shows a figure which seems to be sitting beside his bed as he turns to look he sees n

othing because the creature has disappeared. With sigh of relief because there was nothing there but his still confused he closes his eyes and looks up and a deformed thing on his ceiling and it jumps towards him, this processes will play out slowly as he looks up then the scene will play very quickly as the creature jumps at him at this point the non-diegetic music has picked up and is very loud. The creature is screaming at the boy. He manages to escape into a different room but in doing so he trips up and falls down but luckily he get into the room in which the creature can’t get him. Then we hear scratches from above the boys head as he looks up the creature is there and it cuts to the title of the movie which is still to be discussed within the group.
The non- diegetic sound will be loud to scare the audience then it will slowly fade away. That will be the end of our opening scene, we include quite a few conventions for example, no signal, falling over, and the false scares that we have with the shadow moving across the camera. The aim for this horror movie is to be different to any other cliché horror movie, we like to think that, making a difference is better than following the norm and that’s why we think that having the title of the movie and the end of that little opening is a good idea because its different to what other people will do. We also aim to use the basic conventions that we see in popular films, so running into a room in which the only way out is to face the villain directly, also the use of no signal on the phone also gives the sense that you know the character is going to have something bad happen to them.

This treatment was done by the “BlackHat Films” production team and we have all generated our ideas to the page and soon to the stage, everyone had a fair amount of input into this treatment and we hope that we can produce a piece of work that will be interesting to watch and leave the audience interested in watching the rest of the film.

Audience Feedback

The following post was completed by Panashe charamba as part of the collation of results from the questionnaire made by team black hat.

As a group we discussed what the three potential openings are. After the discussion we decided which opening we liked best, and by Majority votes and filming budget taken in to account we chose Opening two. To check if our decision was the best one, we decided to create a questionnaire with the three openings, and we asked the audience "Can you please rate our opening out of 10", 10 being the best and one vies versa. Titus then took these questioaires and wrote up the final draft which he then took to the public to get the results.

To validate our results we asked the people who best suited the description of out target market and this was a a young outgoing teen who liked to socialise and was a horror films enthusiast.
The people we asked also had to be at least 15years as this was the age rating of our film.

Our results show that opening two was the highest rated opening, with 109 points, then opening three second with 91 points, and then with 84 was opening three. From this we where able to see which opening our target market wanted, which would help us greatly as we would know which opening to make, to get the best reaction from the audience. This questionnaire didn't affect our choice greatly as we already wanted to use opening two, it just simply supported our decision.

Three Possible Openings

The following post was completed by Mariella Ralph; as part of the discussion about the three openings conducted by team black Hat.

The plot of our movie is based on an urban legend of a mother whose son died in the same house in previous years. The mother couldn't cope with the loss of her beloved child and committed suicide - unknowingly to the couple and their child now living there. The child looks identical to the deceased child and causes the mother's spirit to protect him so it can give herself that second chance; in conclusion of doing this, she harms everyone who will ever come across his pathway.

In lesson today, BlackHat Films worked together to create three different potential openings for our movie. Underneath I will explain the three different openings we decided as a group.

The first opening-
The parents leave their teenage son at home with his friend. The boy's friend see's this mother's ghost and warns the other boy to get out of the house - the boy oblivious to what's going on, ignores what's happening and refuses to leave his house. The friend becomes scared and decides to leave him on his own and tells the boy it's his own fault for not listening. The boy is left on his own, beginning to get paranoid and suspicious of his friend's accusations. With his parents out of town, the boy calls up his neighbour to come around and check everything is safe inside his house. The boy faces outside the window to see his neighbour on the phone to him and as the neighbour reassures him telling him he'll be over and everything will be fine, something comes up behind and murders him. The boy begins to panic and the titles begin…

The second opening-
This boy becomes disturbed with these flashing mental images of how this mother died. The flash backs build up to her death with individual shots leaving the boy confused. Each room the boy enters he receives a flash back of the history of this story in his head.

The third opening-
This opening reflects on the teenage son who died and the recent teenage son in the same family house. For example, if the recent son was to enter a different room in the house, it would flicker back to the previous son walking into the room and if the recent son was to make a movement such as take a drink, it would flicker back to the previous son doing the same action.

This section of our work, is where the group discussed the three possible openings, for our teen horror film. this will help us as we will know have choices, of which will be the best opening. this task will also allow the group to get audience feedback for the opening and we will be able to which on the target audience will like best.

Target Audience

As a group we discussed what our potential target markets characteristics should be like, to do this we all wrote what we wanted the character to be like, in three individual colours. My-self I wrote down in green pen, Mariella Ralph wrote in purple and finally Titus Goremucheche wrote his ideas in Red. this task will help us colate which characteristics we want, after being decided by the group.

The typical member of our target audience is quite confident and socially active. We have chosen to brainstorm our potential target audience based on a male even though we would want female's to enjoy out movie too we felt this might allow us to describe further detail into a male character. The age we are focussing on is from 15 to 17. This male enjoys sport activities and plays quite a masculine character. Alternatively with this in mind, he doesn't have a dad and plays the protective brother towards his little sister who lives with him in his mother's house. Even though he likes the classic horror genre of movies, he carries a great sense of humour.
In his spare time he likes to watch old classic movies at home from his DVD's or any film's shown on television. He also prefers to go on dates and watch new released horror films so he has someone to cuddle up to and not show his weakness. He is a student and to earn extra money he works a part time job at ASDA which involves him working on the tills and talking to customer's because he has excellent communication skills. He takes pride in his appearance with his nicely styled hair and good fashion sense. As well as taking care of his skin, he is also well-groomed with a good hygiene.

Reasearch: The Opening titles of se7en

In this task we where asked to analyse the opening title sequence of  "Se7en"

The video below is the opening title sequence of the film "se7en"

In this task I watched the opening of the film se7en and noted down everey time i saw a title in a time line ranging from 00:00 to 02:08. This part allowed me to see what infomation is given by the written text and how it is presented, this will then help me, when making the opening for our film, as i will knoiw what sort of format to use. The next part of the activity was where I looked at the visuals provided with the text.

This section allowd me to see what infomation which was provided, using the visuals and how it was constrcted, to create its sence of mystery and fear. the techneques used, almost created a back story to the film, with out going in to to much detail and you almost see what the film is about in these small clips used, and this technique could be very usefull, in the making of our film opoening. the final section of the activityuwas where I looked at the auditor
y infomation. This was the music played duing the title sequence.

The music played further supporeted the sound reasearch i i conducted prioir to this. the music used a range of uncomfrtable sounds, which could be easily incorporated in to our film as the sounds are relevent and taking inspiration from this sound track could further develop the music we could use in the opening.

Research: Importance Of Opening Titles

The opening titles in a film can just be important as the, the opening two minutes of actually filming. then opening titles are key as they give the audience key information that that either they will want to see or the makers of the film will want them to see.

Usually in the opening titles you will see the most important people, who are part of the film, for example the producers and the big name directors. In the open might also see, the a list actors which might be crucial to this film, as they can usually make or break the film. Despite the producers adding their names for fame etc. They also add they for the purpose of the audience as they sometimes go to films because they have a certain actor or a certain director and producer. Another piece of information you see in the opening is the studios names, usually the big companies have their own animation going with their company like Marvel and Warner bros, they sometimes you could see the smaller companies written as "in collaboration with…" or "In association with" as they are less know and the larger companies want more attention towards them. the last thing you see is usually the the name of the the film and this is conventionally done in bigger and more distinguishable text for example in the horror film "Candyman" which is shown bellow;

This is the film title in "Candyman", as shown the title is large and recognisable, as this is important to the company that they get the film name across to the audience.

This image is in contrast to the one above. In this case it shows an example of where the information given is the actors in the  movie. this information is important, and the producers want the audience to know the actors but, but the still it is still not as large as the title.

During the opening titles you will also be given information through the music played, as this can be a key aspect, it telling the audience what genre the film is. A lot of opening tiles have sound as this has become the norm on the opening titles. The piece of music played during the opening titles can also  be be used as a trade mark for the film and the audience will the associate the music to that film, and this is commercially beneficial for the films. One good example of  music used well in the opening credits was in the film the exorcist. this film uses the music, to show that the film is a horror film with the high pitched violins and the distorted notes. The music then changed  in to, old catholic church music, this further informed us that the film might be based on religion, all at the same time as giving use the visual information of the written credits.

Click on the image bellow to watch the opening credits of the exorcist, the video also contains the audio with goes with the credits.

The opening titles can also, present the information through typography one example where typography is used to good effect is in the Exorcist. This typography is good as is is big and bold this makes us think that the film is going to be hard hitting and leave an effect on the audience. the text is also in red, the red colour means danger, fear and blood, so this foreshadows what the film is about.

Conventions of the opening titles

The opening titles also have conventions which most films follow. usually the films follow the same order in what appears first in the opening titles. The first titles to appear, are most likely to be the name of the Studios, these could be the companies, which may have made the film or produced it. These could be films like Walt Disney Pictures, Lions Gate, universal and Marvel.

The second titles to appear are the production companies. This section is where the companies which actually made the the film, the companies which invested a large amount in the film and these are usually titled as in association with .... Productions.

The third title is then the the Producers name, which is labeled as (Producers name) Production. Then separately it is then the director which is labeled as a film by (Directors name) or a Film by (directors name).

The fourth title or Titles are usually the the actors names. theses are usually the more prolific actors, which will impress the audience, or in other cases the actors which have in their contracts that their name will be added to the opening titles .

the last title but in some ways one of the most important titles, is the of name of the film, this usually is in larger bolder fonts, which will stand out and and be unique from the the other title

The video titled "Art Of The Title" can be accessed by clicking on the image below:

The following videos have allowed me to see and understand how the development of the films opening titles have occurred, they also show the significance of the opening titles, in cementing the genre of the film by the designs and music used, furthermore it gives a wider view of the different techniques used in the opening titles to make them unique to the individual film. The videos also show me how good opening credits look like so I can then use them as either guidelines or inspirations when designing our own.

Research: Sound in Horror Films

Sound in horror films is key to the fear factor created. One key piece sound used is the non-diabetic sound used in horror films is the music. this is the sound with the film creators want you to hear, and is to enhance the film experience.

Good examples of were soundtracks have been used to good effect is in jaws and psycho. Scientists now think they know why these films, use these sound tracks and why they make us feel the way we fell when watching films. the reason which they think this music makes use feel uncomfortable is because, "the harsh, discordant and unexpected sounds used in the horror soundtracks imitate the screams of frightened animals" according to the Mail online . The sounds which these films used are called non-linear sounds, these toes of sounds are mostly heard when animals are in distress, they are used to show the animals fear. These intern have been used purposely, by film makers to enhance the emotional impact of the scenes. These sounds remind us of fear and danger, which is why they make us feel uncomfortable, and distraught.

Some more modern sound tracks are slightly more sophisticated in their approach. Movies have found ways to twist, music which most would think of happiness like nursery rhymes, and know represents fear and something much more sinister. I believe the suttle of the nursery rhyme/music box songs is much better, as it makes the viewer uncomfortable, as they try to relate to the music, but along side the images and the way its portrayed, this becomes much harder and makes the audience uncomfortable.

Through this research I have found that it is best to find something that people relate to audience, like nursary rhymes and make them discorded and twist them and make the audience uncomfortable. One example where this is used to good effect is in "The Ring" and also in "Silent Hill"

KBA AS Media Studies- 60 Second Movie Pitch

This is our 60 second movie pitch, produced by Black Hat Films. The 60 second pitch basically highlights what the general theme of the film will be, with out giving too much information as there could be a large amount of changes whilst filming. The purpose of this pitch is to sell the idea of the film, so we should be enthusiastic about the film and make it quick and give the interesting details so the audience don't lose interest.

This is the planning process of the 60 second pitch. As a group we sat down and disscussed the general outline of the film as a whole, and wrote them down on the sheet. This planning meant when we where filming the pitch, we would know what to say and we would stick to the original idea.

Codes and Convensions Essay

In this essay I will look at the first two and a half minutes of three horror movies. The Movies which i looked at where "Dead Wood", "Dead Mary" and "Wrong Turn". All these films have similarities and differences which can be identified, and decoded to translate to the audience that the films are horror films.

The first film which I looked at was Dead wood. The opening two minutes of the film are set in, a typical secluded forest, and is basically a man getting chased through the forest by some sort of villain and is killed, then leaving his vulnerable partner on her own. This opening two minutes can then be dissected in to the technical codes. The film starts of with slow edit, with a high angle shot which slowly pannes down until it reaches the forest floor, in to the puddle. This is meant to calm the audience before they use a false scare, with the splash when the man runs in to it. From this point on, the editing then speeds up dramatically with quick cuts, from close ups to show the emotion on the man being chased (which is typical for a horror), to him running away. This is a fair contrast  from the slow start as this is meant to entice you and get the adrenaline flowing in the audience. During this chase the camera shots and angles constantly change, from crane to low angle, panning the point of view of the man being chased and the killer, and these are all done with a hand held device which gives a shaking effect, and this distorts the picture and adds to the confusion and anxiety in the audience.

The chasing stops and the man reaches an obstacle which he has to jump, at this point the action slows down, to show the thinking processes of the character. the character then jumps this obstacle and there is a low angle shot which shows the height at which the character is jumping. Eventually the man doesn't make this jump, the editing then speeds up to show the stress in the character as he nearly makes it but fails at the last hurdle. The angle of the camera shot changes to a high angle shot to show how vulnerable this character is at this moment, and then the character dies, and during this death, the film sustains this high angle shot and the killer never appears in the frame of the camera. When the commotion is over the edit slows down again and goes to a high angle shot of the women who is getting out of her tent and slowly gets higher to show
her vulnerability.

The film opening has a large amount of non diagetic sound as the piano starts of slow as the film starts calm, and then when there is the false scare the violins and piano speed up to show the danger and this also reflects the speed of the editing. Before the actual film starts during the titles there is some diagetic sound of birds, this reassures the audience of the location. The other noticeable sounds in the opening are rustling of the leaves as he is running plus the heavy breathing, these both show the struggle of the character.

The second film which I analysed was Dead Mary. Like dead wood this film also starts very slow. The opening two minutes is a women sitting in a car, again in a secluded forest which is a highly common convention in the horror genre. This women is sitting in the car, fidgeting looking in the dash board tapping on the car etc. then eventually a man comes to the car with fuel, and we assume that this man is her boyfriend. Unlike dead wood the hints that this film are more suttle. Despite this the technical codes used are very much similar. the editing is quite slow and there are a lot of close ups, but fear is not shown in these, it is just to show how bored the female is. When the female is scrimmaging there are also a lot of close ups to the objects which is picking up. One key example of this is the flair gun which she picks up and the keys, these are shown as close-ups to show their importance and to tell the audience that they might be in danger later on. the high angle shots which are used are not used to the same effect as dead wood, it is more or less to show what she is sitting in and what she is wearing. One thing which is noticeably different from dead wood is the play with depth of field, they use this to show everything in the frame, but they want you to focus on certain aspects, they have do this instead of close-ups.

On shot which the used well was the POV shot, they use this shot to make it seem like the is something watching the women in the car, they use this shot to make the audience suspect something is happen, this is the only sense of horror which we really see with in the first two minutes of this
film.

The diagetic sound in dead Mary is used better than dead wood, as when it exits in to the main film out of the titles, you first hear, the squeaking of the chain, combined with the close-up, this makes you wonder what is hanging on the chain, and the rusty squeak also rings and stays in your head, this gives the fear factor without using the music. When the camera moves away from this there is not a large amount of noise, as it wants to create tension. Another event when diagetic sound is used well is when the radio is turned on, on the radio you hear almost a laughing possessed noise, and a lot of white noise, this scares the audience, as they fear whats making that noise, meanwhile also showing the audience that they are in a secluded location.

The third film which was wrong turn, starts of in another secluded area, which is again the forest, the opening two minutes show a couple who are rock climbing then the male reaches the top while the women only manages to make it half way. The man meats something at the top and is killed. The women then falls when she is attacked, and she then runs away from the attackers, she nearly makes, until she is tripped and dragged away.

In wrong turn the technical codes start during the titles, as the text for the title are in capitals and are slightly blurred, and the letters are spinning to resemble the "Wrong Turn". The film starts with a helicopter shot, which gives a bird eye view of their location. During the birds eye view there is some non diagetic music being played, which sounds like it is being played on stringed instruments like violins etc. The music is quite dark, to show intensity and mysterious, this creates a sense of danger already in this opening. The camera shots start slow like the other films, and stays with this high angle shot when it is showing the couple climbing, this shot makes the characters seem small and weak as it looking down upon them.
The camera shots start going in a series of POV shots where the women is looking up to the man, and the man looking down at the women. These shots clearly show the audience which of the two are more powerful and stronger, making the women vulnerable. When the film goes to the false scare of the women falling down the rock face, the editing speeds up to show the increase in action and the speed of which the women is moving, plus this sudden burst of editing shocks the audience, helping to create this false scare. as the women is falling down the camera also follows her down very quickly, and then slows down again to show that the panic is over letting the audience recover.

After the man is thumped and killed the camera takes an establishing shot where we se the women on the rock face also and we really see how small she is. after this we see a lot of high angle shots and POV shots of the women as she see her partners blood fall on her face, and this kick starts another section of quick editing as the man is then pushed of the rock face edge and falls to hit the ground. the editing stays at this pace to show the women's struggle as something is trying to pull her up and we start to see a lot more close-ups, of the climbing gear and her face, to show her emotion and stress. when the women falls we then see a two shot of her landing next to her husband, and then close-ups of them both, then it quickly switches to a, panning shot of the killers running through the forest chasing the women. As the women starts to run the they switch to hand held cameras, this is used to show the confusion of running though the forest as its very unbalanced and distorted, with in this there is a lot of POV shots and mid angle crabbing shots. when she is tripped over we then go to a POV long shot of the car which, which is a crucial shot as it links to the conventions of the women seeing her means of escape but she can t reach it.

During this we hear a range of non/diagetic sound. to start of the music is slow, but when the speed of editing speeds up so does the intensity of the music, this increases the sense of fear. There is also a large amount of diagetic sound like the birds which are used to establish the location like in Dead Wood and Dead Mary. They also make sure you can hear the dripping of the blood on women's face as hits, as this is an important element in horror, to create fear through the site of blood. Another key sound we hear is the sound of the man being hit. This is also important as we do not actually see the man being hit, this is used to tell us something has happened to the man.

Also alongside the technical codes, the film opening also have a various amount of symbolic codes, also known as mise-en scence, these are basically what you see in the frame, things like props, costume, location and make-up.

Dead wood is set in a dark isolated thick forest, this shows us that if the victims where to try to escape from anything they would find it very difficult as they would have to run through this forest making escape less likely. the characters in this opening where not really dressed for camping and where not really prepared, this means they where already vulnerable in this environment. The male was wearing a bright red shirt with flowers on their shirt, this shows the man to be a cheerful character, this creates a bond with the audience as he is then likable, meaning when he does get killed it has a greater effect on the audience. Despite the mans shirt being cheerful it was also red, and red is usually used to represent danger, which we soon find the man to be in. while the man is being chased  we see that he has blood and sweat on his face, this shows us that the chase might have been going on a lot longer than is shown on screen. when the character finally dies there is blood coming out of his mouth, this could show he has bitten a blood capsule in his mouth, there for showing the amount of stress he is under. Unlike the other two films, this one does not seem to have a car in it, this might shows there are very limited ways of escape, making the couple furthermore vulnerable

Unlike dead wood dead Mary also is very limited in the amount of symbolic codes, this seems to be the case for most, as these symbolic codes usually have specific messages. The first major symbolic code which we see in dead Mary was the, rusty chain swinging, as we see it we don't really know whats hanging, on the chain and this creates an image in our mind of whats hanging on the chain, this is a sign of danger, and we think that this might be a key part of the opening scene. Another crucial prop we see is the flair gun. this gun is coloured red, this is a crucial colour as it represents danger, and flair guns are used to call out for help, these are some suttle little hints that show the film is a horror film. The location where the girl is stranded is also very secluded, and we see this when she turns the radio on (which is another crucial prop), this shows us that its a secluded area as there is no radio signal and its just white noise, meaning they are far from any town or cities. the seclusion of where they are, is also shown by another prop which is the mobile phone she has. when she tries to call someone she seems not to be able to find any network, this shows us that she is very far from anywhere.

Both the male and female in the opening scene are quite young, the female is wearing a small amount of clothing and has painted nails, but limited amount of make up, this female is also very attractive, these features show that the film target audience is very young because of the characters they use and how they dress. The male is wearing normal clothing and does not attract as much attention as the female, this could show us that he is a lesser character in the film.

Wrong turn also has a very limited of props and symbolic codes, even though they are in very similar locations, as dead wood and dead Mary, on the other hand, they are doing very different activities. unlike dead wood the couple in wrong turn look very prepared for what they are doing, where as in dead  wood the couple, which are are camping and are in more casual clothing, in wrong turn they are wearing climbing gear, and have clearly prepared. Despite this the women is still wearing a small amount of clothing and showing a lot of flesh, this indicates that the film will attract a lot more males in the audience. Like dead Mary wrong turn also has a car. The car in wrong turn is used differently to the one in dead Mary as, in wrong turn the car is used to show safety, as that is where the women is running toward as she is being chased, where as in dead Mary it is almost used as a location and the women never actually leaves the car. Wrong turn also uses other smaller props like the barbed wire which the killer uses to trip up the women and drag her away, this barbed wire shows us that the killer is very ruthless and wants their victim to feel pain.

During the two minutes opening you also see the typical symbolic codes like the blood which drips on to the women face when her husband is killed, or the sweat on the man and the women have as they are climbing, and when she is running away, which shows that they are tired, and already weakened by the activity they are doing before they are killed by the villain.

The films are also filled with a lot of horror film conventions, which are things we would expect to see in horror films, so it is easier to identify the film and link it to its genre.
In dead wood the film has the typical horror conventions like, a clear threat is established with in the first five minutes, as the man is being chased. the films also starts with a false scare at the start, when the man  steeps into the puddle when being chased, false scares are widely used as they are surprises, and are not expected as they happen, when it is still calm and nothing dangerous is really happening. the film is also set in a secludes area, which is also a key as a location for horror films, as this pre-empts that there is no escape from where they are. dead wood also uses conventions like the victim tripping over when being chased, then they meet a nearly impossible obstacle, and they nearly over come it giving the audience hope, then inevitably they die anyway after all that hard work, an the character killed is the male who then leaves the poor defenseless women to defend herself.

Dead Mary has slightly less obvious conventions compared to dead wood as it is a slower start without much action, but the ones which are there are very important to the opening scene. the most obvious conventions is the, lightly dressed female alone in the middle of nowhere alone, and we know she is in the middle of nowhere, because of the other conventions like no phone signal, or radio signal, meaning she has no way of contacting nobody, and these two are used a lot in horror films to show the clear hopelessness of escape when they are being chases by the killer. there is is also a scene of anger when it seems like there is something watching her, but we do not actually know if this is whats happening, or if its just a different view point of the camera

Wrong turn differs from the other two as its completely filled with obvious conventions. it starts with showing us their location of a large thick secluded forest, and if this is not enough one of the actors lines is that they are miles away from anyone. after the location is established they move on to show that the female is the weaker sex and needs help from the man, to climb up the rock wall, this is to show that the women is vulnerable. after the man is killed,(which is another convention, someone killed in the first five minutes) he leaves this women alone. The women is then chased but she first falls from the rock wall and some how survives without sustain to much damage, meaning she overcomes the first obstacle, giving hope to the audience. during this there is also a creepy laugh from the villain which is a classic horror convention. After running through the forest she sees the car, her route of escape she is suddenly tripped over with barbed wire, and dragged of, after all that effort she comes so close to escape but the villain always comes of best. these are just some of the many conventions used in wrong turn, and wrong turn has taken these conventions to full advantage in the opening scene to fully establish this film as horror to the audience.

overall we see there are a lot of similarities between the three openings of each film, and these are elements which allow the audience to fully engage in the film and allow them to identify the films as horror. From this I can also see that the codes and conventions can bee mad extremely obvious like wrong turn or suttle

like the ones in Dead Mary, and it is sill easy to distinguish them as horrors.

Research: Codes and Conventions

A convention in filming is something you would expect to see happening in a certain genre of film.
in this case horror has a lot of convention which people would, can a lost predict was is going to happen when they are watching a film.
These conventions could be:

  • When running away front the villein, they hide in the most obvious or dark isolated place they can find with no escape.
  • When they are trying to escape, they are most likely to trip over or can not find their car keys.
  • the characters they use can be conventions as there is always a funny guy, and a vulnerable girl, and a lot of the tile there is a confident brave person.
  • They can  be more simple ones like there is no mobile phone signals to get help.
Codes with in filming are elements that can be decoded by the audience to provide meaning and these can be divided in to two different groups.
Some codes within horror are:
Technical codes
  • Camera shots
  • Camera angles
  • Camera movements
  • Editing
  • Non-diagetic
  • Diagetic sound
  • Lighting
  • Titles
Symbolic codes (Mise-en-scene)
  • Costume
  • Make-up
  • Setting (location)
  • Props
Theses simple things are the foundations of films which let people identify, what film they are watching and they have been created through time as what people associate with, and expect to see.

Main Task: Set Brief

The tile and opening of new teen horror film, to the last a maximum of two minutes.

All video and audio meterial must be original, produced by the candedate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free souce.

What Scares Me

This film trailer shows how my fear has been used to create a film called "Snakes on a Plane".
this film shows how my film has developed as i was already scared of snakes before i watched this film, but the way which the snakes have been portrayed increases that fear, showing how effective the film was.

The trailer also uses key horror techniques like snakes jumping out towards the audience and the normal blood and gore. what the trailer does very well is that it does not use music, the trailer creates tension by using the sound effects of the the environment like the plain engines and computers, instead of using music. this draws the audience in as they are trying to listen to each individual sound, this intern gives the excitement factor as this is the point where the adrenaline is pumping.

This trailer also can show how other fears can develop, as some could be scared of going on planes after watching this film, therefor creating a new fear.

Research

This is the group task. We had a discussion of what our fears are, and how they have developed. one example is mine, where i am scared of snakes, and this fear has developed through films like "Sakes on a Plane".

This task helps use understand others peoples fear and how they have developed therefor allowing us to be able to to know how to portray it best when making the film. this task can also work as an idea session, so we find out what people are scared of then we can choose the one which we can actually do and work with. The task also helps use focus on why people are scared of, what they are scared of, when we know this we can then focus on the specifics, to get the best effects from the film.

Why Fear is Fun

Preliminary Task Evaluation

When filming the footage, i found it very difficult to to keep a steady shot, as i did not have a tripod or crane etc to keep the camera steady, this meant we had to film certain, scenes more than once to get a clean shot. shooting in school meant we had a few restraints, like the space we could use and the lighting that was available within the building, as we had no control over them, this also meant we had to constantly change the angle of the shot to restrict the amount of light entering the camera.

some things did go well During the filming process. I found a lot of extras, this made the environment of the filming more realistic as they were in a school, meaning there would need to be students at least at one point in the filming to reassure the audience of the location where this event is taking place, and this also made it more believable. While filming I could have thought of the surrounding sounds in the rooms, for example the doors shutting when the characters where speaking, this can be distracting, and the speech could have been lost, but a lot of this was not in my control as, it was a busy environment where there where a lot of people moving in and out of room.

There are three main sections of the production process which i did. the first section is pre-production, this is the process where, the casting members, costumes, location planning, storyboards and and props are all decided. these are basically the steps that need to be taken in to account before the filming has started, by taking these steps you have a set plan, and you subtract future problems as you will already know what the lighting is like as you have done the location planning, or you have the right characters.

Production is the other step, this is where the actual filming and recording takes place. The aim of the production (Principal photography) is to film all the shots needed for the film, in no particular order. this part is where the pre-production takes its affect as all the actors and locations are already chosen. and this is where the director is usually in charge.

finally post-production is where the final editing and creation of the final piece is made. this section can include some production, if mistakes have been noticed in the filming or if the editing can not fix it. mostly this section involves;

  • Editing video footage.
  • Editing the soundtrack, adding sound effects, music, etc.
  • Adding titles and graphics.
  • Colour and exposure correction.
  • Adding special effects.
  • Re-shooting certain scenes. (Pick-up shots)
in post-production you also do some continuity editing, this is the process where the smoothing out of the film is done and where the discontinuity of the film is fixed and connected to establish logic in the shot. As a result of all the elements which are involved in the this process, this section can be the most time consuming of them all.

While using iMovie i found it very easy to use, as it was all set out very simply, one key feature which made it very easy to use was the auto save, which meant you didn't lose your progress, and all the shots filled would appear in one place and also all the shot that have beet edited continually are separated and these can be added or remove with the right click.

while doing the test edit and the final preliminary edit, i learnt how to, fade in and out music, this is a good feature, because if the music just suddenly cut of half way it would make the production sound untidy and interrupted
. i also learned how to mute the background noise as some of it was unwanted for example doors slamming and people talking, as it was either to distracting or to loud when the music was placed over it.
thirdly i learned how to add subtitles to the film for instance, when there was a text on the phone, and it was not readable, because the text was to small and there was light reflection from the screen. I used the subtitles to so write what was on the screen so the audience know what the text was about, there for it would allow the audience to interact with the film as well.

Overall i think i have done very well in my preliminary task as i have used a variety of shot, which we where expected to use, and i think that is one of the strengths of the film as it does have a wide range of camera shot and angles, one unique camera shot I used was a low level shot, looking up at the character, which made it differ from other films. this shot also give the audience a different view point of the character, which keeps the film interesting.

another shot which was key to the continuity task we were give, was to use shot/reverse shot. shot/ reverse shot is a sequence of dialogue where it uses the 180 degree rule, to show one characters looking at the other character talking, and usually the camera is over the shoulder, then it switches to the opposite character to show the response of the second character.

another shot I used well was the closeup shot. I used this shot alongside the shot reverse shot to show the reaction of character two, when he is told the joke. With this shot you can see that the joke does not amuse him as shown by the expression on his face, and because I wanted to make this clear, so I Tried to show
detail in his face. I also think that my timing when using the shot reverse shot was good, as a continuity shot as it made sense and non of the lines where interrupted.

Another strength of the film was, the match on action. This is a technique used when creating a continuity task. When one shot goes to the next shot, but its a part of the same sequence of movement, no sections of that movement are lost or repeated. One example where i think this was used accurately was, when character two walks towards the door, then moves to a different shot to them opening and walking through the door. this looked clean and it flowed, because it look like the character started from where he left of in the previous shot.

on the other hand i think some of the week points in the editing phase of the production where the, unwanted background noise, which you can hear when the character is on his phone. this particular noise is negative as the character says something and you can hear door slamming in the background and i think this could be an improvement as we could have found a quieter location. Another background noise which affected the quality of the film was, noise that was not muted when the music was placed over it, this made the piece sound untidy at points and took some of the affect of the music.
