Research: Codes and Conventions

A convention in filming is something you would expect to see happening in a certain genre of film.
in this case horror has a lot of convention which people would, can a lost predict was is going to happen when they are watching a film.
These conventions could be:

  • When running away front the villein, they hide in the most obvious or dark isolated place they can find with no escape.
  • When they are trying to escape, they are most likely to trip over or can not find their car keys.
  • the characters they use can be conventions as there is always a funny guy, and a vulnerable girl, and a lot of the tile there is a confident brave person.
  • They can  be more simple ones like there is no mobile phone signals to get help.
Codes with in filming are elements that can be decoded by the audience to provide meaning and these can be divided in to two different groups.
Some codes within horror are:
Technical codes
  • Camera shots
  • Camera angles
  • Camera movements
  • Editing
  • Non-diagetic
  • Diagetic sound
  • Lighting
  • Titles
Symbolic codes (Mise-en-scene)
  • Costume
  • Make-up
  • Setting (location)
  • Props
Theses simple things are the foundations of films which let people identify, what film they are watching and they have been created through time as what people associate with, and expect to see.
