Premiere Pro Test Edit

This is the stage where I start to develop my editing skills, as I move from iMovie to Premier pro which is a more advanced industry standard software.
Imported files. This is what the files look like when they have been imported.

The time line in premier pro differs from the one on iMovie as it allows you to stack clips, titles and audio on top of each other so its easier to see and edit.
this can then let you do other editing effects like having a smaller separate screen on top of the other, to illustrate a phone call.

Filming: Mise- en-scene

This blog was completed by Mariella Ralph as part of team black hats discussion on the miss-en-scene int the opening.

Carrie (played by Lisa Eady)
This was the make up i produced on our character 'Carrie'. I used face paint to consume a pale colour to her skin but not too pale to make it look like she was quite clearly covered with white face paint. To prevent her from having a single tone on her face I added some other colours to make her make up look more realistic to our audience. I used black to blend in some shadow on her cheeks, nose, forehead and chin so she was able to display a slimming affect along with a daunting approach. I also added some blue to blend out some paint that didn't seem to look alright. I based our character's make up on my experiments which are shown through miss-en-scene. I made some slight alterations as Lisa who was playing our character had eye make up on so i managed to smudge that around her eyes to add effect. I didn't place any blood on her face as it would be irrelevant considering she didn't do anything which caused her to bleed.

Her costume was victorian like we aspired for. She wore a white shirt with a black dress over the top of it. To add an old effect so our character looked like she was dead, I added talcum powder to her clothes, hair and face to give her that final touch.

Matthew (played by Aaron Castagnette)
Aaron didn't need any make up added on to him as he was acting as a typical teenage boy. He wasn't attacked so there was no need for blood or bruises to be added on to him as it would have been irrelevant. Aaron's costume involved him in wearing a plain black t-shirt with some comfortable football shorts as that would be expected of most boys to wear to bed. Aaron used his iPhone as a prop instead of the Samsung we originally had planned, this was because the original prop we had planned was unavailable to use so we had to improvise with another phone.

Filming: Camera testing

Before  starting the filming as a team we had to see if the the camera produces the images which we wanted. by testing the camera, we where able to see its strengths and weakness, and then adapt the opening to this, which would then allow us to produce the best quality film owning possible.

In our opening we had to overcome lighting issues, as the opening was set at night, so we had to see how the camera coped in the dark and what sort of images it produced.

The first shot we had to test was the establishing shot. this shot was set outside, but at night. tho meant that we had to balance the lights from the surrounding environment, and the lack of light focusing on the house, so we could get a clear recognisable establishing shot. In the shot below we had to make sure  we could clearly identify which house the establishing shot w meant to represent, this meant we couldn't let it get to dark so we could still get the silhouette of the house as the light came from behind the house. in this shot we also had to make sure that the lamp we where filming next to wasn't to bright, and didn't disturb the lighting of the shot.

Another shot we had to test was the interior shots. in these shots we had to make sure that we could clearly see what was happening in the shot, but at the same time we still had to have the room dark, as the person in the shot was sleeping. at first the shot was to dark as we didn't have enough light, then we decided to shine a torch, on to the white ceiling so some of the light would be reflected.

Planning Casting

MatthewWe are looking for a white male between the ages of 16-18. Hair and eye colour can vary; there is not a specified colour that we intend on having. This male has to be very confident because that is how Matthew is going to be portrayed in the film. This male must be well organised, confident, outgoing and VERY flexible with their time and also well organised.
Matthew is a one of those teenager kids who has a very focused mind, he knows what he wants and he goes for it. One thing that Matthew is best at is hiding his true self to people he comes across as this courageous, fun slightly egotistical kind of lad but his not like that; deep down he is a soft, kind and caring guy, who is quite afraid of coming across as an inferior individual towards his friends.

Luke Munyaradzi
We couldn't cast Luke because even though he was very confident in front of the camera he couldn't meet the criteria for what we wanted 'Matt' to look like.

Brian Oblitey
Brian seemed like the perfect candidate to play 'Matt' as he studies drama and is an excellent performer. He could easily adjust to our requirements if we needed to make any sudden changes. However Brian has a busy time schedule including his own Media film opening and would not be able to film when we are available.
Aaron Castagnette
Aaron best fits the part to play Matthew as he has the most resemblance to him than all the other applicants. Aaron is confident in front of the camera and would be open to any day we would ask him to film with us. On top of this, Aaron is quirky and can adjust easily to the work we will give him.

Carrie
For the role of Carrie we are looking for a female within the age range of 18-30. Hair and eye colour can vary; there is not a specified colour we intend on having. This female must be has to be very confident as that is how Carrie is portrayed in the film. This female must be well organised, confident, outgoing and VERY flexible with their time and also well organised.

Carrie is very confused to an extent that she thinks that the boy who is known as Matthew is her son due to the fact of similar characteristics and mannerisms. Carrie is a woman of the 1800s so she is humble, simple minded, kind and thankful but in her ghostly form she is vicious, angry, scary and very protective

To play Carrie you have to be able to have  diverse skills in emotions and mannerisms  as that would best fit the role of Carrie.

Becca Payne
Becca is quite shy in front of the camera and even though she has a flexible time schedule and would be able to work with us she wouldn't be appropriate for the role.

Paige Canavan
Paige is an excellent drama student and would be suitable for our role however she wouldn't be able to film with us as her time schedule isn't as flexible as we would like it to be.

Lisa Eady

Lisa is confident and a drama student who likes to take a challenge. She is very easy to work with and flexible with her hours. If any alterations were to happen during filming we know that she will be easy to work with and able to play the part given to her.

Planning: Mise-en-scene Make up

Experimenting with Make Up

After looking at the different make up techniques within horror movies, I played around with some face paint and created a distorted character image.

After experimenting with different types of make up ideas for our movie opening, BlackHat films decided on their final idea for what the make up will look like.

The lady 'Carrie' will look very grey/pale from using plenty of face paint and possibly talcum powder as she will need to look old and rotten. We will use makeup such as talcum powder on the hair and the rest of the body to add this effect. She will be hanging herself so there will be no need for drastic cuts on her face however we are going to add slits on her wrist from her suffering the depression she went through from the loss of her son. This will be done with wax, fake blood, Vaseline and face paint.

The boy 'Matt' will have a slight brush of talcum powder to make his face quite pale but not to an extreme this will be because he would have seen Carrie will become shocked and mortified - the expression of the white face will help show his emotion.
